Ready to try it yourself?

You Will Need:
  • 100g soft unsalted butter
  • 2 medium eggs (beaten)
  • 60ml milk
  • 1 large cooking apple (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
  • Demerara sugar to sprinkle on top
  • 20 x 25cm lined tin

Step 1

Preheat the oven to (190°C / 170°C Fan / Gas Mark 5) and line a tin with non-stick baking paper. Place the entire mix into a bowl, then rub the butter into the mix to give a breadcrumb-like texture.

Step 2

Next stir in the beaten eggs and milk with a spatula until well combined and gently stir in the sliced cooking apple.

Step 3

Pour the mixture into the tin and gently smooth to level. Sprinkle the demerara evenly on top of the cake mix.

Step 4

Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin before cutting into squares.

My Hints & Tips to Bake Bold

To customise: Why not add a handful of sultanas to the mix to make the cake extra especial and fruity?

Before Baking: leave the traybake to one side for 10 to 15 mins to get the best rise.

Apples: Any apples can be used. Cooking apples give a tartness and add moisture to the cake, while eating apples are a lot sweeter.

To serve: Serve with a dollop of clotted cream.
